Being mentored in deep nature connection has allowed my own inner mentor to surface, changing my life from isolation to coming into a place of leadership and positively influencing other people’s lives.-Jean-Claude Catry

Over the past thirty years, Jon Young has developed the 8 Shields model to awaken our original design through reconnecting people to themselves, each other, and nature.

The 8 Shields model is a roadmap that weaves nature connection skills and strategies through education, personal development, community building, and organizational processes.

Each of the 8 shields is associated with a cardinal direction, and mirrors a significant natural pattern. The 8 Shields model helps individuals and groups to map many of the patterns, phases and relationships occurring in nature on to the nuances of human learning and culture, as a vehicle for culture repair and environmental responsibility.

Today, hundreds of organizations and countless individuals use the 8 Shields model to help restore regenerative wellbeing for people, families and communities.

In 2012, Jon’s first mainstream book, What the Robin Knows: How the Birds Reveal the Secrets of the Natural World, was published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. The significant positive response to the book, including an invitation to the National Audubon Society’s 2012 board meeting, gave birth to the Nature Connection Mentoring Foundation – to spread the 8 Shields model throughout the broader conservation
movement.
